Pay It Forward

"Is there any reward for good other than good?" --Qur'an

"Pay it forward"! It's an expression that encourages doing good without expecting an immediate return from your giving. This is an act that respects the natural order of things. If you do good, good will be done to you. As a person of faith, I truly believe in this principle. I have expanded my relationships from simply transactional to becoming transformational. 

"Quid pro quo" is about you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours. It's a common practice we all have and continue to operate on because we perceive it as "fair." If you help me, I'll help you. However, what happens when one person can't reciprocate your gesture of kindness? If what they have to offer isn't something you readily need, but you have something they desperately need? Do you still give them what they need? Do you withhold the "gifts" that you've been blessed with? Or do you recognize that moment as an opportunity to invest in that person and your future?

A simple act of kindness can be a beautiful thing! Helping someone holding a sign "I'll work for food." Carrying the bags to the car of an older adult leaving the grocery store or mentoring a young woman who shows promise but has an unstable home life that robs her of good motivations.

It's all about the investment! We invest our hard-earned money in 401k plans with the hope of a good return in the future. We invest in our homes to beautify them and increase their value. We regularly maintain our vehicles to protect our investments and get us from point A to B. What about the human investment? Investing in people brings a greater return in the long run, improving the world in which we live.

The Ask:

Find someone to invest in! They may not be in your immediate circle or a family member, but they need something you have. Give to them from that which you've been blessed. Do this without looking for any compensation from them directly. There should only be one condition: that they, in turn, reach out and invest in someone else. We're here to make the world a better place....one person at a time.
